Note: How did Alexander acquire the lot on Van Brunt & Elizabeth in Brooklyn, which was owned by John Culbert, 1848-1859? His father, John, died in 1849.]

He was named co-Executor of the estate of Alexander J. Culbert in early 1850s.

WATCHES - JEWELRY, SILVER-WARE, AND FANCY GOODS, at the new store No. 136 Canal-st. We would repsectfully invite the attention of the public to the inspection of an entirely new stock of WATCHES, JEWELRY, SILVER-WARE, and FANCY GOODS of the latest and most desirable patterns, embracing all of the different varieties in the above named branches. From several years of practical experience, in connection with our present facilities, we confidently state that all orders entrusted to our care shall be promptly and satisfactorily executed. In consequence of the enormous advance in rents on Broadway, we have been induced to locate ourselves at No. 136 Canal-st. where our friends and the public will find the choicest goods in the market at greatly reduced prices. BENNETT & CULBERT, No. 136 Canal-st.

      -----------------------
Anne Landers, a rather wild-looking woman, was then placed at the bar on an indictment charging her with stealing under rather curious circumstances, a quantity of jewelry, the property of A.C. CULBERT. The complaintant deposed that the prisoner came into his shop and asked to see some diamond rings, and subsequently some plain ones; he produced them, and she put on one diamond and two of the other rings. She then asked for, and obtained, a pair of ear rings, which she fitted in her ears at a glass at the rear of the shop. As soon as she had thus adorned herself, she looked round and proceeded to walk out of the shop. He pursued, and on inquiring what she meant, she said she had a right to go inot any store and buy jewelry, and refuse to give up the property, so he called an officer, who took her into custody. The officer deposed that on being called in, he asked the prisoner to take off the property, but she refused, and inquired whether this was not a land of liberty, where a person might do anything they pleased! [Laughter.] The prisoner, in reply to the Judge, said she had been in this countyr only three months; she had slept on some stairs the night before, having no place to go, and this was the only way she could account for it. The Jury found her guilty, the Judge deferring the sentence until he should ascertain whether his suspicions as to the prisoner's insanity were correct or not.
