- IN WANT OF A WIFE
Amongst other applicants for admission was a young man named Michael Kavanagh, who is lame of a leg. From questions put to him, and answers given, it appeared that Kavanagh was previously an inmate, where he paid his devoirs to a Mag Culbert, who kindly intend[sic] to his tender addresses, and after slight hesitation consented to become Mrs. Kavanagh, and for this purpose both took their discharge, and were soon made two in one by the Rev. L. Kirwan, R.C.C. The bridegroom is by professional calling a pedlar, and his shoes getting dilapidated, and the wares in his basket being exhausted, he was obliged to leave his tender spouse, who, it appears is able to take care of herself outside without the aid of her lord and master. The guardians thoughtfully and kindly taking his case into consideration, decided on giving him a pair of old shoes, in order that he might not be separated from his tender jaggy, and, by the way, a youngster, which she had ready reared for him, before having the happiness of his acquaintance. Mickle[sic] protested against going out without getting something to put in his basket, but the board would not hear of his spending the honeymoon inside the workhouse.

- THE MODEL BRIDEGROOM RESUMED.
John and Margaret Kavanagh, with a six year old youngster named Culbert, applied for admission. Jack is the loving swain- minus a leg - who some months previously made love to Mag Culbert, and went out of the house when the Rev. M. Kirwan, C.C., made them two in one, the rib bringing as her dower the ready reared sprout above mentioned. The Board refused the interesting trio, on the ground that Jack was guilty of disorderly conduct in the house. Mag expressed her manifest surprise and indignation at the unfeeling conduct of the Guardians, seeing that she was now a decent, honest married woman, but all was no go.
