    • Limerick Junction, Wednesday. An inquest was held at the Railway Station here to-day concerning the death of Thomas Culbert, railway signalman (68), whose remains were found last night on the up line. Evidence was given that he finished work as signalman at Grange level crossing, four miles from the junction, and had to walk the line for four miles to his house. He and another man went to a neighboring publichouse at six o'clock, and Culbert had a pint and a half of stout, but was not under the influence of drink. The men parted on returning to the permanent way, and at nine o'clock Culbert's body terribly mutilated was picked up. A verdict of accidental death was returned, the jury adding a rider that the company should provide local housing accommodation, so as to render such journeys along the line unnecessary. Culbert had been walking four miles over the line to and from work for seventeen years, and was a steady, sober, man. [11]
    • A coroner's jury at Limerick Junction on Wednesday found a verdict of accidental death in the case of Thomas Culbert, aged 58, a signalman at Grange level crossing, whose mangled remains were found the previous night on the railway line near the Junction Station. Mr. M Slattery, stationmaster at the Junction, stated that Culbert's hours of duty on Tuesday were from 7 a.m. till 4p.m. He was a signalman in the cabin for about 17 years. The place where he was killed would be on his way home. Mrs. M Bresnahan stated that the deceased was in her public house at Kyle between 5and 6 the previous evening. He was served with 2 pints of stout, but only half finished the second. He was perfectly sober when he left between 6 and 7 o clock. John Carew who was in the licensed premises of the last witness, with the deceased, at the time referred to, corroborated her evidence as to the amount of drink taken by Culbert. The railway sleepers that night were very greasy, and it would take a quarter of an hour more to walk the distance to the junction than on an ordinary night. Deceased was perfectly sober when he left witness.
      Death Instantaneous.
Dr. C.E.Ryan, who examined the deceased, said he found Culbert's right arm reduced to pulp and cut off from the body. There was a large wound on the right side of the skull, which was extensively fractured. Death must have been instantaneous. J Lindsey, driver of the 5.10 Cork train said he noticed nothing unusual happening to his engine. The night was dark and he saw no one on the line after leaving Limerick Junction. Other witnesses examined were deceased's brother William, William Moloney, Sergt. Hanbridge R.I.C., the latter stating that the railway line was the only way that the deceased had of going to or coming from his work. Mr. Millar, who represented the Railway Company, said if the deceased had been a single man he would have been provided with a residence near the signal cabin. The jury recommended the widow and family to the kind consideration of the company.
