    • Dr. William A.M. Culbert, one of the leading physicians of Newburg, N.Y., many years, died yesterday morning. He was born in New York city November 4, 1822. He was graduated from the academy department of the University of the City of New York in 1841, receiving the degree of B.A. He pursued a post-graduate course at the same institution, receiving the degree of M.A. in 1844. He then entered the office of Dr. Valentine Mott and studied medicine, at the same time attending the regular medical course at his Alma Mater, which in 1846 granted him the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He was only twenty-four years old when he established himself as a physician in Brooklyn. He went to Newburg in the fall of 1847. He was married in 1852. His first medical course was in the old school of allopathy, but he subsequently became a homeopathic physician and lately his practice had been somewhat eclectic. He leaves a widow and one son, Francis R., who is a member of the brokerage firm of Culbert, Crane & Seabury, of this city.

    • Dr. William A.M. Culbert died at his home, in Newburg, N.Y., yesterday morning of Bright's disease. He was one of the most prominent homeopathic physicians in the State, and resided in Newburg for upwards of forty years. He was born in this city on Nov 4, 1822. His early education was obtained in the University of the City of New-York, from which he graduated in 1841. Soon after he commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Valentine Mott, and later entered the medical department in the University of New-York, receiving therefrom the degree of Doctor of Medicine on March 11, 1846. Dr. Culbert's intention was to settle permanently in Brooklyn, but after building up a good practice there he was induced to go to Newburg, and in 1847 he gave up his already lucrative business and opened an office in the city where he died. He was married in October, 1852, to Miss Henrietta Powell, granddaughter of Thomas Powell, who still survives him, as does an only son, Francis R., who is a banker and broker, doing business a 7 Wall Street.

As described by the Calvert Vaux Preservation Alliance: The Newburgh City Club, originally the Culbert House, was designed by Vaux and A.J. Downing in 1851-52 during their all too brief working relationship. The house was designed for a prominent Newburgh doctor, William A.M. Culbert (design #22 entitled "Suburban House With Curved Roof" in Vaux's book, Villas and Cottages), and was expanded after the Newburgh City Club acquired it in 1904. The building was restored in 1975-76 only to have its interior gutted by a suspicious fire in 1981. The City Club still sits today in front of the south end of the Newburgh Free Library. The exquisite concave roof is completely gone, as are the majority of the building's exterior design elements, yet its basic structure appears to be sound and restorable. It is part of CVPA's mission to see that this contributing building to Newburgh's Montgomery - Grand - Liberty Streets Historic District is fully restored and an adaptive reuse found that will benefit the Newburgh community and its struggling economy. Culbert.

    • Dr. William A.M. Culbert is a native of new York City, and was born Nov. 4, 1822. During his earlier years he resided in the city and enjoyed the benefits of excellent educational training at the private schools of the period. He subsequently entered the Academic Department of the University of the City of New York, at which institution he was graduated on June 12, 1841, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Three years later he received the masterÂ’s degree. After the termination of his academical course only a brief interval elapsed before dr. Culbert commenced his medical education. He entered the office of prof. Valentine Mott as a student of medicine, and the year following was matriculated in the medical department of the university of which he was an alumnus. After completing the three yearsÂ’ course of prescribed studies he received the degree of Doctor of medicine on march 11, 1846. He soon after settled in Brooklyn and entered upon the practice of his profession, meeting with a degree of success that was very encouraging. His friend, A. Gerald Hull, M.D., a distinguished physician of New York, had recently withdrawn from practice and settled in Newburgh to recover his health, greatly impaired by hard work in his profession. By this gentleman Dr. Culbert was urged to remove to Newburgh also, and this, after consideration, he finally resolved to do. Accordingly, on Nov. 8, 1847, he arrived in that city and took rooms in the United States Hotel, where he immediately opened an office, entering almost from the beginning upon a good practice, which in time became extensive and lucrative, and included many of the most desirable families of the vicinity. Dr. Culbert was married on oct. 12, 1852, to Miss Henrietta, daughter of Robert and Louisa A. Powell, and granddaughter of Thomas Powell who was then in the enjoyment of a vigorous old age. Since his marriage the doctor has occupied the residence corner of grand and Second Streets, with his wife and son, Francis R. Culbert, in the enjoyment of a high degree of professional success. For twenty years so closely confined was he that he was scarcely absent from the duties of his profession as many days in all as that number of years. His practice demanded his full time, and so incessant were his labors that at last health began to yield and rest became imperatively necessary. This he took in 1870, and again in 1871, several months of each year traveling in Europe and visiting many of the medical institutions of the countries through which he passed. Besides occupying the position of an intelligent and successful physician in the community in which he has passed so many years of his life, Dr. Culbert is also recognized as one of the leading citizens of Newburgh, performing in a plain, modest, dignified, and courteous manner the various social duties that devolve upon him. While taking an active interest in the public events of the day, and in the local enterprises of the city, he has prevented by the pressure of professional duty from participating in political or public life.
      [29]
    • William A.M. Culbert, M.D., was born in New York City November 4, 1822, where during his earlier years he resided. His father, John Culbert, settled in New York soon after the Revolution, and for almost half a century was engagde in mercantile pursuits. Dr. Culbert was a graduate of both the Academic and Medical Departments of the University of the City of New York, and pursued a post-graduate course in the former, after receiving his degree of B.A., and entered the latter from the office of his preceptor, Dr. Valentine Mott, then the most noted surgeon in the world and Professor of Surgery in the University. Dr. Culbert, early in his professional life, espoused the principles of homoeopathy, and settled in practice in Newburgh in the Fall of 1847, where he remained until his death."
"Carefully educated, possessed of an unusually clear and logical mind, fully alive to every advance in his profession and allowing no one dogma to fetter his judgement - he was a physician in the broadest sense of the term. Ever true to the interests of his patients, Dr. Culbert soon won and maintained to the time of his death the reputation of an accurate diagnostician, an independent thinker and an unusually practical and successful prescriber."
"Dr. Culbert was married October 12, 1852, to Miss Henrietta, daughter of Robert and Louisa A. Powell, and grand-daughter of Thomas Powell, who was then in the enjoyment of a vigorous old age."
"Besides occupying the position of an intelligent and successful physician in the community in which he passed so many years of his life, Dr. Culbert was also recognized as a leading citizen, performing in a plian, modest, dignified and courteous manner the various social duties that devolved upon him."
"His patient, earnest effort in the interest of health, his devotion to the suffering, his rare good judgement which seldom failed in effecting prompt relief, his gentleness, his honesty - all these qualities endeared him in the hearts of many until he ceased to be looked upon as a physician merely upon duty bent, and was held in esteem as a friend. This place, which he won, this honor in which he was held, this solicitude which the whole city expressed during his illness, are so many evidences that he possessed a rare quality of manhood. Besides his widow he left one son, Francis Ramsdell. Dr. Culbert died November 10, 1890.
