      Culbert Cabin in Guntersville, Alabama
      ----------------------------------------------
Finding the cabin is very easy. US Highway 431 is the main street in Guntersville. Approaching from Huntsville, on Rt. 431 south (which is one way), cross over the river bridge and into the main business section of town. There is a residential section before another smaller business section. Just as the residential section ends is a sign to the right pointing to the Guntersville public library. Turn right, go to a stop sign and you will be facing the library. Go past the library to the next street and turn right again. The library backs up to the old armory grounds (which is being turned into a Heritage park). The cabin sits on the corner of the armory grounds. The Culbert cabin was reduced in size and moved to the Heritage Park as an example of the workmanship of the time. Allison Simpson, April 2006

    • Mathew Culbert was not raised by his parents. I think that Andrew Park, Mathew's uncle, took on the care and education of Mathew almost immediately after Mathew was born. Thus, I think there were alot of things about the Culberts that Mathew was unaware of. When he emigrated to the US, in 1830, it was his uncle, Andrew, who wrote a letter of introduction and recommendation to his other uncle, James Park, who was then residing in Tennessee. Andrew writes in the 1830 letter that Mathew had been raised with the Parks, and had been living with them full time for 10 years. In another letter, Andrew writes that the family of James and Elizabeth Park Culbert had build a home on the Park land. The letters very often state that the Culberts were in a very bad condition, but they do not state why. Several times, Andrew wrote to his brothers in the U.S.A., James and William Park, asking them to provide assistance and mercy to the Culberts.

For the birthdate of Mathew: Mathew's immigration record states that he was born on 10 Aug 1803. The census records indicate that he was born c. 1802. However, a letter from Nancy Aiken Park to James Park dated 30 May 1803 (postmarked 4 April 1803) says. "Little Matthew Culbert, Elizabeth's oldest child, remains with us, he is a thriving, sturdy child, as is her other child Nancy. Their Father and Mother are both pretty well in health for further particulars I refer you to Andrew's letter to you of this date." Andrew's letter was also dated 30 May 1803. Thus, the immigration record birthdate is wrong. Family information indicates Nancy was his younger sister, and her immigration record indicates she was born 1801-1802. This suggests Mathew was born 1800-1801.
