The Presbyterian Church at the corner of Rutgers and Henry Streets was constructed in 1798. Burials in the churchyard stopped about 1820. All future burials were in the Rutgers Cemetery at Houston Street until 1860 when a municipal ordinance forbade burials in Lower Manhattan. From May 1865 to September 1866, the Church's Board of Trustees transferred all bodies from the Houston Street premises
to the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx where they had purchased lots for this purpose. There are no extant records of initial burials in the churchyard, and no sexton's records, however the Church holds burial transfer records for those reburied at Woodlawn. The Rutgers St. Presbyterian Church was later moved uptown to 73rd Street.
