    Moses CUTHBERT
    • Moses' surname was clearly written as Cuthbert on the ships' passenger list. A ship's passenger list was typically prepared by the ship's captain or his representative before the ship left port, and finished upon arrival. This list was created from the documents and other information supplied to the captain by the traveler. These documents were created when the immigrant purchased his or her ticket. Also, any required exit visas and other paperwork had to be examined by ticket agents before a ticket would be sold. Thus, it was highly unlikely for a person's name recorded on a ship's passenger list to be incorrect. This would suggest that Moses changed his surname to Culbert after he arrived in the U.S. [5]

    • SUDDEN DEATH - Moses Culbert, an esteemed citizen of Chester township, died suddenly in one of the fields on his farm, on Monday afternoon last.  He was about to repair a panel of fence, and left home, carrying a heavy rail, for that purpose.  He was found shortly afterward, life being entirely extinct.  It is the opinion of a physician in the neighborhood, that he died of a disease of the heart.  He was of a kind and genial disposition, and much respected by his many acquaintances.

This chest was in the home of William (Bill) Eves Culbert, Sr. and was passed down to Jane Culbert Young before her brother, Walter, rescued it from being used as a chopping block. Walter refinished the lid and reattached it with the words now on the inside, and with the hinges on the opposite side. The chest is currently in the possession of Walter's granddaughter, Loralee Culbert Fontenot.

This bible was last in the possession of Anne Culbert Bourne Schulz, and was lost after her death. What remains are photocopies of two pages showing marriages, births, deaths, and memorandums. According to Anne, the bible was given by Moses to his daughter Hannah in 1839. The original entries in the bible are likely to be Hannah's. The significance of the margin note is not known.

  • Notes
    • More information on Moses and his family can be found at my Wordpress site, here: https://culbert.one-name.blog/wp/?page_id=908
    • Nothing is known about Moses' time in the U.S. from his arrival at Philadelphia in Jun 1828 until Aug 1830.  There is no evidence that he resided with his brother in Wilmington, Delaware.  Moses migrated to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and on 10 Aug 1830 he declared his intention to become a U.S. citizen before the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County, Pennsylvania.  Moses was not listed in the 1830 Philadelphia business directory, nor has he been found in the 1830 U.S. federal census.  He was obviously not a head of household at that time.

An unknown John CULBERT (I2425) household was found living nearby in Nether Providence Township, Delaware County from 1830-1940.

A search for Florence SULLIVAN [witness on Moses' Petition for Naturalization, Sep 1833] in Delaware County also resulted in no head of household in the 1830 U.S. federal census by that name, although both a Joseph SULLIVAN household [Roll 150, p. 296, Nether Providence Township, with males aged under five, 10-20, and 20-30, and females aged under five and 20-30] and a Sarah SULLIVAN household [Roll 150, p. 298, Nether Providence Township, with no persons of any age marked] were also both found in Nether Providence Township.

    • Considering the middle names given to Moses' and Jane's children, Bennet, Fleming, and Morrison are known family names. However Snowden, Campbell, and Irvin are not known.

It is also most curious that their son, James, was written into the family bible records as James Fleming Culbert, however in ALL other records found he was named James C. Culbert.

In the Tithe Applotment Books there is a Joseph Irwin in townland 59, Garsuey, Taughboyne, line 301, as well as 4 Campbells in this Parish, plus 19 Campbells listed in Kilmacrenan, with one, a widow Campbell, in Ballyscanlon, line 395.

    • Review of deeds obtained from Delaware County - there are references to a deed for two tracts conveyed to Moses by Thomas McGrath dated 7 Mar 1857, and one of these tracts conveyed by Moses to John Lindsay on 30 May 1857. Neither of these deeds is found in the County's index of surnames on Deeds for Grantors or Grantees. More work is required to find these records.

Note the thickness of the numeral one and the "th", which remains uncorrected. Could the date have originally been entered as July 30th, with the numeral zero later changed to a 1? This record found pinned inside a Flavius Josephus Jewish history book, presumed to have been owned by the family or one of the Culbert family daughters.

This may indicate a family relationship in the Letterkenny area of County Donegal, Ireland. The "Missing Friends" column ran in The Boston Pilot, the Roman Catholic newspaper in the city, from 1831 to 1921. Irish immigrants used the ads to locate loved ones after they became separated in their journeys to America. Some were looking for a spouse who skipped town, while others sought to unite families. All of the 31,000 ads shed light on the immigrant experience. Boston College is posting an online database of the ads that anyone can search. According to BC's announcement, the database is an electronic version of BC professor Ruth-Ann M. Harris' eight-volume set called "The Search for Missing Friends: Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed in the Boston Pilot." Harris researched and edited the set for the New England Historic Genealogical Society. The first ad appeared in October 1831. Most of the ads stopped after 1915, when the Archdiocese of Boston bought the Pilot. Also, by then, postal service had greatly improved, allowing better communication among families and friends.
