    • When Liza Oliver Griffith, Dora's grandmother, died, Dora was only about 10 years old. She didn't go to the funeral because her mother, Laura Bell, was sick. It was a cold day. Dora remembers that Liza was buried on the hill out from Caldwell Springs, which Buckles Cemetary. (As told to Amy Ballard 2004)

      As told to Amy Ballard by Dora:
      Dora was born at the foot hills of the Holston Mountain in Ed Absher's old log house. The cracks in the walls were big enough for the rain, snow and wind to blow through. The floors in the cabin were dirt. The family had to eat wild meat such as: squirrel, rabbits & hogs. Her father would knock the hog in the head to kill it and hang it on a wooden pole. Estel was from Bluefield, West Virginia. Dora and a friend had met him and they started going to church and working together. They lived in the watermelon shack on Willey Blevins' land. The only things they had, when they got married, were an iron bed, which they made a straw tick bedding for, one bench for both of them to sit on, 1 plate, 1 cup, 1 skillet and a coffee pot.

      Melissa Ballard Long claimed in 2009 that Dora was still living then, age 85.
