  • 10 Feb 1841: Upper and Lower Canada Renamed
    The Colonies of Upper and Lower Canada were merged into the province of Canada by the Act of Union of 1840, and Upper Canada (Ontario) became Canada West, while Lower Canada (Quebec) became Canada East.
  • 1 Jul 1841: Colony of New Zealand

  • 30 Mar 1867—18 Oct 1867: Alaska Purchase
    William H. Seward, the United States Secretary of State, negotiated the Alaska Purchase with the Emperor of the Russian Empire, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland, on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million. Six months later the commissioners arrived in Sitka and the formal transfer was arranged at Fort Sitka on October 18, 1867.     The Commonwealth of Australia was established as a dominion of the British Empire. Britain's Statute of Westminster 1931 formally ended most of the constitutional links between Australia and the UK.     Oklahoma was created through the combination of the Indian and Oklahoma Territories.

  • 1909—1961: Republic of South Africa Independence
    An act of the British Parliament (South Africa Act 1909) granted nominal independence, while creating the Union of South Africa on 31 May 1910. The Union was a dominion that included the former territories of the Cape, Transvaal and Natal colonies, as well as the Orange Free State republic. In 1931, the union was made fully sovereign from the United Kingdom with the passage of the Statute of Westminster, which abolished the last powers of the British Government in the country.   • 6 Dec 1922—29 Dec 1937: Irish Free State Established
    On December 6, 1922, the Irish Free State was established under the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921. At that time, the six counties of northern Ireland decided not to become a part of the Irish Free State.
